“Patients’ Bill of Rights” For Substance Use Disorder Becomes Law in California
Like much of the country, California has a significant problem with fraudulent and substandard SUD care. The new law will help patients and their families understand the level of care they should expect—and will impose stiff penalties on those who deliver less.
Signed by governor Gavin Newsom in April, the California law requires that families be informed of all treatment options as well as the risks of treatment, the certifications and qualifications required of staff at treatment facilities, and how to seek redress with the help of the state when providers fall short. It also specifies that all patients have a right to treatment that is evidence-based and free from coercive, exploitative, or abusive practices of any kind.
